Julian Wildgruber
Filmmaker, fifteen years an entrepreneur, and today I accompany people who carry a great deal. I work where leadership, health and meaning meet – with individuals at the top, and with leadership teams inside organisations.
For four years I asked what keeps a person alive.
For my feature documentary From Business to Being I worked for four years with Jon Kabat-Zinn, Otto Scharmer, Tania Singer and Götz Werner. The film follows three executives looking for a way out of the rat race – a former investment banker at Lehman Brothers, a major-projects manager in the car industry, and a regional manager at the drugstore chain dm.
It premiered at DOK.fest Munich in 2015, reached cinemas in 2017 and was reviewed in Süddeutsche Zeitung, Tagesspiegel, Bayern 2 and Hamburger Morgenpost.
What came of it.
Teachers for Life (2020) asks what children need in order to grow into people who can stand on their own – and what it means to be a teacher in the twenty-first century.
Schütze die Flamme – Zukunftsbilder aus der GLS Gemeinschaft [year] documents a change of leadership, in a spirit of both farewell and beginning. Silver Award, Deauville Green Awards, 2022.
For the law firm Hogan Lovells we devised and delivered a Europe-wide campaign across fourteen offices – a four-part film series, an internal communications programme alongside it, and a launch evening at the ARRI Filmlounge in Munich. It won two Golds and a Silver, including best internal communications campaign across multiple markets.
My work has taken me to places that had very little in common: film sets in Yakutia, in the United States and across Europe. Board meetings. Stages. Summer academies for corporate leadership groups. Retreats where science and contemplation meet.
The craft.
The Mindful Leadership training at Witten/Herdecke University. The year-long Trigon programme 'Drawing from Deeper Sources'. The MBSR training in the Jon Kabat-Zinn tradition.
Everything I pass on I tested on myself first – over years, not in a seminar.
How I work.
What I do is essentially the same whether there's a camera in the room or not: I get people to say the thing that usually goes unsaid – and I give it a form that reaches others.
One to one, that means seeing where someone actually stands, and where they're avoiding themselves. Helping them find their own sources of strength again and come back into step with what carries them.
In organisations, it means building rooms and formats where real things get said – and translating them so they land across the business.
I don't believe in leadership without heart. Compassion is what makes a person genuinely powerful – once they know where to open up and be vulnerable, and where to hold a line to protect themselves.
Where to go from here.
Practice Journey – twelve weeks of personal accompaniment for entrepreneurs and senior leaders who carry a great deal.
From Business to Being · Live – a day with the film, for boards, executive teams and leadership groups.
